Pool Filter Cleanout Service in Long Island
A dirty filter drives up pressure, strains your pump, and pushes cloudy water back into your pool. Our certified technicians deep-clean every filter type across Nassau and Suffolk County leaving your system running the way it should.
Signs Your Pool Filter Needs a Cleanout
Your filter is the workhorse of your pool's circulation system. Over time, it collects oils, minerals, algae, and debris that backwashing alone cannot remove. These four warning signs tell you it's time for a professional deep cleanout.
High Filter Pressure Reading
A clean filter operates within a normal pressure range established at startup. When the gauge reads 8–10 PSI above that baseline, the filter media is clogged and restricting flow. Continuing to run the system at high pressure puts unnecessary strain on your pump motor and can shorten its lifespan significantly. Backwashing may temporarily reduce pressure, but if it climbs back quickly, a full cleanout is needed.
Cloudy or Green Water Despite Chemical Balance
When your water chemistry is properly balanced but the pool still looks hazy, murky, or green, the filter is almost always the culprit. A saturated filter cannot capture fine particles and algae spores it simply pushes them back into the pool. No amount of shocking or algaecide will clear the water if the filter cannot do its job. A thorough cleanout restores filtration efficiency so your chemicals can actually work.
Reduced Water Flow from Return Jets
Noticeably weak return jets are a direct signal that water is struggling to pass through the filter media. When a filter is heavily loaded with oils, calcium scale, or debris, it creates resistance that chokes the entire circulation loop. Weak flow means your pool is not turning over the water volume it needs, which leads to stagnant zones, uneven chemical distribution, and accelerated algae growth in low-flow areas.
Filter Running Longer Than Usual
If your pump is running significantly longer than your set schedule just to keep the water looking clear, your filter efficiency has dropped. A dirty filter requires more circulation time to achieve the same level of cleanliness meaning higher electricity bills and more wear on your pump. This is a common sign that the filter media is past the point where backwashing or a rinse cycle will help, and a professional deep cleanout is the right next step.
How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?
The right cleanout frequency depends on your filter type, pool usage, surrounding environment, and how consistently the water is maintained. Pools near trees, in high-use households, or in areas with heavy pollen and dust typically need more frequent service.
As a general rule, a professional cleanout goes beyond what backwashing or a simple rinse can accomplish. Backwashing removes loose surface debris from sand or DE grids, but it does not remove oils, calcium deposits, or deeply embedded contaminants that accumulate over a season. A full cleanout disassembles the filter, inspects the components, and cleans the media or grids properly.
If you are on a Pool service schedule with us, we track your filter's condition and notify you when it's time so you never have to guess.
| Filter Type | Recommended Frequency |
|---|---|
| Sand Filter | Once per season |
| Cartridge Filter | 2–4× per season |
| DE Filter | 1–2× per season |
| Heavy use / lots of trees | More frequent |
| After algae bloom | Immediately |
| After pool opening | Recommended |
What's Included in a Professional Filter Cleanout
A professional filter cleanout is not just a rinse. Our technicians follow a thorough process that inspects, cleans, and reassembles your filter system so it performs at full capacity when we're done. Here is exactly what is included in every cleanout visit.
- Complete filter disassembly and inspection of all internal components
- Cartridge or DE grid cleaning with pressure wash and degreaser
- Sand bed inspection and channeling assessment (sand filters)
- Acid wash soak to remove calcium scale and mineral deposits
- Tank interior rinse and inspection for cracks or damage
- O-ring and gasket inspection; lubrication or replacement as needed
- Manifold, laterals, and standpipe inspection for cracks or wear
- DE recharge to correct dosage after reassembly (DE filters)
- Pressure test after reassembly to confirm proper operation
- Filter pressure reading logged and baseline reset
- Water chemistry tested and adjusted following service
- Written summary of filter condition and any recommended repairs
Filter Types We Service
Every filter type works differently, ages differently, and requires a different cleaning approach. Our technicians are trained on all three systems and carry the parts and supplies needed to complete each cleanout properly on the same visit.
Sand Filters
Sand filters are the most common type on Long Island. They work by passing water through a bed of silica sand that traps particles as small as 20–40 microns. Over time, the sand becomes coated with oils, biofilm, and calcium deposits that backwashing cannot fully clear.
Our sand filter cleanout includes a chemical degreasing soak, thorough backwash cycle, and a full inspection of the laterals at the base of the tank. If the sand has channeled, compacted, or exceeded its effective lifespan (typically 5–7 years), we will tell you and provide replacement options. Neglected sand can actually start pushing contaminants back into your pool rather than capturing them.
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters use a pleated polyester element that captures particles down to 10–15 microns finer than sand. They require no backwashing, but the pleats accumulate oils, sunscreen, pollen, and fine debris that a garden hose rinse will not remove.
Our cartridge cleanout includes removal of each element, a thorough pressure wash between every pleat fold, an overnight or extended soak in a commercial filter cleaner and degreaser solution, and an acid rinse to clear mineral scale. We also inspect each cartridge for torn pleats, end cap cracking, or deterioration. A damaged cartridge that looks clean can pass unfiltered water directly into your pool. We identify these issues before they become a bigger problem.
DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters
DE filters are the highest-performance residential option available, capable of filtering particles as small as 2–5 microns finer than either sand or cartridge. They use a set of fabric-covered grids coated with diatomaceous earth powder as the filter media.
Our DE cleanout involves fully disassembling the filter tank, removing and individually cleaning each grid with a pressure rinse and chemical soak, inspecting the grids for tears or damage that would allow unfiltered water to bypass the media, and recharging the system with the correct amount of fresh DE powder after reassembly. DE grids that are torn or worn cannot be cleaned back to effectiveness they need replacement, and we carry common sizes on the truck.

Filter Cleanout FAQs
These are the questions we hear most often from Long Island homeowners before scheduling a filter cleanout. If you do not see your question here, call us directly and we will walk you through it.
Most filter cleanouts take 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the filter type and how much buildup is inside. Cartridge filters with multiple elements take longer because each one gets cleaned individually. The system is back up and running the same day.
Most filter cleanouts for residential pools in Nassau and Suffolk County run between $125 and $250 depending on filter type and condition. DE filters tend to cost a bit more because of the recharge with fresh powder. We give you a price before we start. If we find damaged parts during the inspection, we let you know before doing any additional work.
No. Backwashing reverses water flow to flush loose surface debris. A full cleanout opens the filter, removes internal components, deep cleans everything, and inspects for wear or damage. Backwashing is routine maintenance between cleanouts. A cleanout is the deep reset your filter needs once or twice a season.
Yes. A clogged filter forces the pump to work against higher resistance, which raises motor temperature and shortens pump life. It also reduces circulation, which makes your heater and chlorinator less effective. A pump motor that should last 8 years can burn out in half that time if the filter stays dirty.
If a cleanout brings pressure readings back to normal and water flow improves, the filter is fine. If pressure stays high after cleaning, or if we find cracked housings, torn cartridges, or damaged DE grids during the inspection, replacement parts may be needed. We always try cleaning first and only recommend replacement when the parts are genuinely worn out.
